People might think this is certainly one topic that does not need more awareness, what with every packet of cigarettes stating “smoking causes cancer” upfront, not to mention images of cancer-ridden body parts (gruesome, indeed).
So, we all know about lung cancer, right? However, lung cancer is not the most frequent life-threatening complication of smoking, cardiovascular disease is. The same cardiovascular disease that is the number one killer in the world.
Smoking attacks nearly every organ of the body, increasing the risk of an endless number of medical conditions: stroke, lung diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer of almost every organ (1/3rd of all reported cancers in the world), reduced fertility, type 2 diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis… the list goes on.
Tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death in the world.
